The Middle School Principals' Association of the City of New York is a group of professional educators who recognize and value the educational, social and emotional needs of young adolescents. Our mission is to provide vital support, collaboration, teamwork and professional growth, as well as advocate for middle school education as a distinct entity for young adolescents in New York City through the following;

  • Facilitating best practice and supporting the administration and supervision of middle level educational programs
  • Representing middle school administrators in professional and public discussions of policies and educational programs unique to the middle school student
  • Collaborating and maintaining professional relationships with other associations that provide experiences for middle school educators
  • Providing opportunities and resources that assist in the professional development and continuous improvement in the attitudes, performances and practices of middle school educators

The Middle School Principals' Association is an organization that has evolved through the years and continues to provided Middle School Principals with the support and collegiality that is essential in providing leadership to the middle schools of New York City.

HOW WE BEGAN

Coordinating Committee of New York City Principals:
Dr.Jack Bloomfield was the Treasurer of the Elementary School Principals Association. At an Executive Board meeting, they were discussing problems such as School Discipline, Sick Leave and Dr. Bloomfield pointed out that they shared the same concerns with the heads of the other principals' groups. Why couldn't they get together with them? After objections that they were antagonists (over the salary differential), Dr. Bloomfield was challenged to pursue his ideas and was empowered by the Executive Board to make contact. It worked. For two years they held monthly meetings on many matters and negotiated with the Board of Education on Sick Leave and obtained results on the 5-day suspension.
The organization existed for two years. When CSA was born, Dr. Jack Bloomfield gave his records and minutes to CSA.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Before the MSPA, The predecessor of CSA (Council of Supervisors & Administrators) was the Coordinating Committee of New York City Principals. This was an active group and among their attempts to tighten discipline was the creation of the five-day suspension.

When the CSA was created, The Junior High School Principals Association
was part of it.
At a meeting of the JHSPA, a member suggested that since we were no longer needed, that our excellent treasury be divided among our members.

This idea was defeated. The principals insisted that the JHSPA was a professional organization that focused on the needs of pre-adolescent and early adolescent children, the professional staffa that served them, and the communities that supported their schools.

THAT FOCUS HAS NOT CHANGED OVER THE YEARS AS THE MSPA CONTINUES UNDER ITS PRESENT LEADERSHIP.
